Crusted BBQ Turkey Burgers are a refreshing take on a burger that gets topped with bbq sauce and crunchy toppings like diced red onion, cabbage slaw, and a juicy tomato slice.
I love this recipe because sometimes having a sandwich for dinner is both the easy way out and completely satisfying. This one is a great change-up from a burger not just from beef to turkey, but because of the flavor too. Classic burgers are well-known for tasting char-grilled, while this Crusted BBQ Turkey Burger is unlike any classic burger. For starters, it gets coated in crushed cornflakes. Then it gets cooked in the oven to be crispy & oven-fried. Which pairs really well with the BBQ sauce that gets topped on it. Plus – to finish it all off, use really crunchy toppings like diced red onion, pickles, cabbage slaw, etc. for contrast. And in the end, the overall flavor is basically that it feels like it came from Texas. Did I mention there’s hot sauce in the batter?
FROM A NOVICE COOK
I’ve been making this recipe for years when I first started cooking for myself. I would buy the Rachel Ray magazine every month because her recipes were delicious and fairly easy to follow for a beginner. I would tag every recipe I thought looked amazing with a post-it and would work my way through each issue. This was how I started my journey from “make pasta every night” to cook real meals. I may have also watched the movie, Julie & Julia, around this time and was completely inspired by this movie based on Julia Child.
The reason I keep coming back to this recipe is because its really straightforward, delicious take on a burger, and has a really unique Cowboy-Esque flavor. I simplified it so that instead of making your own bbq sauce, I just use my favorite bottled kind. I think one easy tip to make sure these come out great is to use a rack on your baking sheet. That way, the hot air can circulate underneath and get the entire patty crispy.

Bake for 15 minutes and for the last 5 minutes turn your broiler on high to really get the outsides brown.

When finished, place them on the rolls and top with BBQ sauce and other toppings.
